Sacraments

Baptism:

If you are interested in having your child baptized we ask that you speak to one of the priests after one of the Sunday Masses. Please be aware that to have your child Baptized in our parish you must be in the parish boundaries or a member of our parish due to Sunday participation. It is expected that you are attending Mass every week. Baptism is the gift of eternal life. But it also brings with it expectations and responsibilities. At the baptismal celebration parents promise God to raise their child in the Catholic faith. If a parent cannot in good conscience make this promise at this time, they should delay their child’s baptism.

First Communion and Reconciliation:

After a child has been baptized in the Catholic Faith (or has been received into our Catholic faith community through a reception celebration), the gift of the Eucharist and the healing Sacrament of reconciliation is celebrated when a child reaches the age of reason (i.e. grade 2). In our parish we currently work with our Catholic schools to ensure that your child is prepared for these sacraments. However, it must be noted that Sacraments belong and are celebrated by the Church and NOT the schools. We encourage parents to inform themselves as to how they are to register their child, by calling our parish office. Our program begins in early September and information is passed on via our weekly bulletins.

Confirmation:

After a child has been baptized in the Catholic Faith (or has been received into our Catholic faith community through a reception celebration), has received their first communion and reconciliation, the gift of Confirmation is celebrated. In our Archdiocese this occurs in grade 8. In our parish we currently work with our Catholic schools to ensure that your child is prepared for this sacrament. It is important for parents to remember that all sacraments belong to the Church and are celebrated as such from the church. The Sacrament of Confirmation is NOT a school event or celebration. We encourage parents and candidates to delay this sacrament if they are currently not practicing their catholic faith. Our Confirmation program begins in early September. For information regarding registration and enrolment, please refer to our weekly bulletin or call our parish office of information.

Marriage:

If you are enquiring about marriage at St. Mary’s parish, please call the parish office to arrange a meeting with one of the parish priests. To be married at St. Mary’s church you must be a registered practicing member of our parish. It is expected that you contact us one year in advance of your wedding date. After receiving your wedding date (i.e. from your meeting with one of our parish priests) you will be asked to attend our parish marriage course which is offered twice a year (i.e. currently in early September and early February).

Anointing of the Sick:

If you know of a family member who is very sick and would like to receive the Sacrament of the Sick, please contact the office to arrange a priest to come to the sick to celebrate this Healing sacrament.

Communion to the Sick:

If you have a family member who is sick and not able to currently attend Sunday Mass, we are able to arrange for one of our Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion to visit them and give them the Eucharist. Please contact the parish office if you are requesting this ministry.
